I first heard this song on the American TV program Weeds when the show flew over the Atlantic and was aired on British TV.

Weeds is no longer shown in the UK it only lasted one season I think, we stopped watching it after episode 4 the only thing I liked about the program was this song Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds that was used as the shows theme tune, after the show finished I forgot all about this great little song until it was revived for a O2 commercial and I smiled once again upon hearing it :-)

Little Boxes Song Lyrics By Malvina Reynolds

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses
All went to the university
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same
And there’s doctors and lawyers
And business executives
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course
And drink their martinis dry
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same,
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

The O2 version of Malvina Reynolds song Little Boxes is not the original they’ve changed the lyrics so it is more relevant to the company, but both versions are good.

Little Boxes O2 version – Things Change Lyrics

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And we thought more
And we did more
And we took away the complexity
And we all smiled together as things began to change
Then the tide turned and the rules changed
And out came the possibilities
And we all lived much better
And we’d never be the same

The band Rise Against also did a cover version of this sweet little song that they gave a rock edge too. in fact since the TV show weeds first used this song in it opening titles, bringing it back squarely back into the public eye there has been dozens of cover song sung by many pop, rock, folk and bands

Bit ironic really taking a song about how things are all the same and then replicating it dozens of times :-) for me there’s only one that is any good and it is Malvina Reynolds original version of the song.
