A seven year old boy from England has raised a staggering amount of money for the Haiti earthquake fund. The little boy did a sponsored bike ride around his park was hopping to raise £500, but he ended up raising over an astonishing 100,000 after posting on the Justgiving website telling people about his 5 mile bike ride.

In his message he said “I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives.

“I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti.”

Some local good news in my area for 2010, Natureland Seal Sanctuary have had a new arrival in the form of a baby penguin . There hasn’t been a penguin birth at the Sanctuary in 15 years.

Two eggs were laid but only one hatched, previous years the eggs had been unfertilized this is the first time Pip and Pepsi have hatched a chick and the new parents are doing a great job by themselves at rearing their new baby, the cold weather meant staff considered hand-rearing the chick, but its parents proved very protective and are looking after the chick themselves.

Good for them humans interfere to much in the rearing of animals and as Pip and Pepsi have proven it’s not necessary for human interference.

We have a female blackbird who has claimed our window box, she keeps chasing other birds away from the food I put out when she visits our garden.

Today she did the strangest thing instead of leaving at dusk to nest down for the night like other blackbirds do, she sat in the window box until it was fully dark outside strangest behaviour I’ve ever seen? she was in the window box hours we thought she was planning on staying the night, but she left in total darkness my son snapped a photo of her though the window. She normally flies away when we go to the window, but this evening she just cocked her head at us and didn’t seem bothered. I’m totally bewildered by this female blackbirds behaviour? Cool though our son was mesmerized watching her .

It was a warm-ish sunny winters day today and me and my son ventured outside and took a walk to our local park where we had a nice slow walk and took pictures of birds and plants.

My son spotted a Redwing I haven’t seen a Redwing in years.
Redwings normally prefer the countryside, but the UK has had a cold winter this year with snow covering the ground for much longer than usual and it has forced the Redwings and other migrant birds into gardens and parks looking for food.

I included some of the pictures we took today, but we didn’t get photographs of all the birds we saw like Goldfinch and bull finch there too small and fast to catch on camera and it was much to cold to hang around to see if we could snap a picture

We’re having a long cold winter this year in the UK which means we can’t get out much, so my son and I have decided to take up Poi.

We were introduced to poi last summer at a circus skills workshop. Poi is the art of swinging two balls on string in a controlled manner while doing tricks.

I’ve included a YouTube video of someone doing fire poi (obviously we aren’t using fire poi to learn ) to explain what poi is.

Poi looks easy, but is isn’t and takes a lot of practise and patience. My hubby naively thought poi was easy after watching me and my son and decided to show us how it was done, after smacking himself in the head a few times he decided to leave it to us

This news story made me laugh out loud . A BBC News reporter was doing a piece about a new “unbreakable” Mobile phone and he managed too break it in the interview OOPS!! Hilarious

I’ve decided to keep an eye out for good news stories, the type that make you smile instead of the usual news which makes you frown and cry a little inside.

Good News Stories 2010

A 14 month old baby had a chopstick lodged into it’s brain. The baby had been playing with the chopstick while the baby’s mom was in another room.

The toddler is thought to have fallen on the chopstick resulting in the chopstick penetrating 4mm into baby’s brain though the nasal cavity.

Doctors in China removed the chopstick successfully and the child came out from the ordeal with no adverse effects

Heroes season 4 started to day on BBC 2. I had forgotten all the exciting things that had happened in the previous season like Sylar being mind wiped and living his life as Nathan pertrelli and that Nathan Petrelli was dead!

How does someone forget that!, I must have had my eyes shut last season or something , and that our favourite character Hero powers are on the fritz.

We watched the first episode of season 4 and was gob smacked when we discovered Hero as a brain tumor and was going to die NO! they can’t let that happen, not to Hero, he’s so sweet and lovely.
